In this blog, I'll recount the records, near records and significantly abnormal temperatures of 2007, starting with December 31st and looking back to January 1st. This post covers October 2007.
October 21: the 2nd warmest of the past 29 years...a high of 80 with a low of 60, producing a mean of 70 (20 degrees above normal)...this is 2nd only to 1979's mean of 77 (27 degrees above normal)...the high of 80 was only the 2nd 80s high since 1979 and the low of 60 was the first 60s low...highs in the 70s and 80s now number just two instances a piece...lows in the 20s, 60s and 70s are very rare, each having only one instance a piece...in 1979, the high was 84 with the record warmest low of 70...interesting to note that in 1978 the high was 80 with a low of 53 for a mean of 66.5 degrees (16.5 above normal)...this high of 80 was the highest temperature for the month of October '78 at O'Hare.
October 20: just the fourth 70s high over the past 29 years (73 degrees).
October 18: the warmest of the past 29 years: high of 78, low of 59 (17.5 degrees above normal)...high of 78 was the warmest of the past 29 years and the low of 59 tied the same reading in 1985.
October 14: only the 4th low in the 50s and the warmest 50s low of the past 29 years.
October 8: the warmest of the past 29 years...high of 87 with a low of 60 and a mean of 73.5 (17.5 above normal)...just beats out the other very warm October 8th day back in 1997...in 1997, the mean was 17 degrees (high of 84, low of 62)...2007's high of 87 was the record-tying high going all the way back to 1949. The low of 60 was only the 2nd low of 60 or higher over the past 29 years.
October 7: the warmest of the past 29 years. For that matter, the warmest October 7th in Chicago's record-keeping history! A high of 87 with a low of 67 and a mean of 77 (21 above normal). The high of 87 broke the former record of 86, set in 1947. The low of 67 broke the former record warmest low of 66, set in 1914. It was only the 4th 80s high and 4th 60s low of the past 29 years.
October 6: the warmest of the past 29 years. The high was 87 (tied 1982) and the low was 69 (near-record warmest low: record remains 70, set in 1879 (128 years ago)). The mean of 78 was 22 degrees above normal. It was only the 4th 80s high and 3rd 60s low of the past 29 years.
October 5: the second warmest of the past 29 years. The high of 84 with the low of 62 produced a mean of 73, 16 above normal. Only 2005 was warmer. In 2005, the high was also 84 but the low was a record-breaking 69 degrees. This was only the 5th high in the 80s and 2nd low in the 60s.
October 4: just the 2nd 80s high (82) of the past 29 years. It was also the 2nd warmest day of the past 29 years. The mean of 66.5 just beat 1997's 66.
