September 14: temperatures were normal (72/58)...of note was the 1.44 inches of rainfall we received from the remnants of Hurricane Ike. Cincinnati, Ohio received a wind-lashing with a gust of 74 miles an hour, causing lots of power outages.

September 10: just the fifth 40s low of the past 30 years.

September 9: only the third 60s high of the past 30 years...the high of 69 joins
69 in 1995 and 67 in 1992 as the only ones.

September 8: only the third 60s high of the past 30 years...the high of 67 joins 65 in 1995 and 66 in 1979 as the only ones.

September 4-7: mean temperatures nearly the same every day...the means were
64 on the 4th (67/61), 63.5 on the 5th (70/57), 63.5 on the 6th (74/53) and 64.5 on the 7th (74/55)

September 4: just the second high in the 60s (67) of the past 30 years...the other 60s high was 66 in 1994...responsibility this year goes to Hurricane Gustov, of which remnants provided us with 2.90 inches of rain and plenty of cloud cover...I remember the rain starting and continuing all day.

September 2: high of 94 was just the third 90s high of the past 30 years...it was 91 in 2000 and 90 in 1999.

September 1: high of 90 was just the third 90s high of the past 30 years...it was 96 in 1984 and 93 in 2000...remarkably, there's only two categories of lows for this day: 50s and 60s, each with 15 occurrences a piece.

May 14: high of 90, low of 56, mean of 73 (15 degrees above normal)...the high of 90 was just the second 90s high of the past 30 years...the record high of 92 was set in 1982

ORD Temperature Updates 2007 (June-Aug.)

In this blog, I'll recount the records, near records and significantly abnormal temperatures of 2007, starting with December 31st and looking back to January 1st. This post covers June, July and August 2007.

August 22: first high of 90 degrees or more the past 29 years (high was 90)... before this, O'Hare had seen eight highs in the 70s and 20 highs in the 80s.
1991 and 1996 narrowly missed 90s degrees as the highs these years were 89.
You have to go way back to 1976 to find the last 90 degree high. In 1976, the high was 90 with a low of 65.

August 19: the first sub 70-degree high of the past 29 years [and coolest high] ...the high was 68 degrees...In fact, you have to go way back to 1967 to see the most recent previous time (before 2007) that the high was sub-70 degrees. In 1967, the high was 64 with a low of 52 and 0.52" of rainfall.

August 18: the first sub 70-degree high of the past 29 years [and coolest high]
...the high was 68 degrees...In fact, you have to go way back to 1963 to see the most recent previous time (before 2007) that the high was sub-70 degrees. In 1963, the high was 69 with a low of 42. What's more, the previous day, 8/17/63, also had a high of 69!

Nothing more to report for August. Therefore I'm continuing with July:

July 8: the second warmest (high of 94, low of 75, mean of 84.5, 11.5 above normal)...warmest was back in 1981 when the high was 94 with a low of 77.
So the low of 75 in 2007 was also the second warmest low behind 1981's 77.

July 3: the coolest high since at least 1979 (71 degrees). The record still stands at 63, going way back to 1909.

Nothing more to report for July. Therefore I'm continuing with June:

June 29: you have to go back 19 years to 1988 for the last time that a high was at least 12 degrees below normal...the high today was 70 and 70 as well in 1988.
The coolest high for the date (since 1979) still stands at 68 degrees in 1984 and the record coolest high is a fall-like 54 degrees set way back in 1899.

June 23: the second coolest high of the date (67 degrees). The high was just 59 at O'Hare in 1979. But the record is 58, set the same year at Midway airport.

June 16: just the fourth high in the 90s (93 degrees) and the second warmest behind 1994's 95-degree high...there were highs of 90 degrees in 1987 and 2006.

June 15: just the third high in the 90s and the "coolest" of the 90s (91 degrees).

June 7: the hottest day...high of 91 with a low of 71...15 degrees above normal.

June 5: just the fourth 60s high (64 degrees).

June 2: just the fifth 60s low (and warmest 60s low): 65 degrees.

ORD Temperature Updates 2007 (Sep.)

In this blog, I'll recount the records, near records and significantly abnormal temperatures of 2007, starting with December 31st and looking back to January 1st. This post covers September 2007.

September 25: high of 85, low of 63...mean of 74 was 13 above normal...it was the second warmest September 25th of the past 29 years...warmest still remains 1986's high of 88 and low of 68 (17 above normal).

September 24: the first 90s high of the past 30 years...a near-record 90 degrees (one degree short of the record of 91 set way back in 1891)...it was only the fourth 60s low and also the warmest low of the past 30 years (68 degrees)...the mean of 79 is 18 degrees above normal, so this was also the warmest 24th of September of the past 29 years.

September 23: the high of 84 degrees was only the third 80s high of the past 29 years and was second warmest (it was 85 degrees in 2004).

September 21: high of 88, low of 64, mean of 76 (14 degrees above normal)...was the hottest 9/21 of the past 29 years...beat out 1980's high of 79 and low of 69.

September 15: the coolest of the past 29 years...the high of 61 beat three highs of 62 (1983, 1984 and 2000)...the low of 39 was a new record low, breaking 40 degrees in 1985...the mean was 50 (14 degrees below normal)...the previous coolest day was in 1984 when the mean was 51.5 (12.5 below normal).

September 12: although the mean was not 12 degrees or more below normal, still it was the second coolest day of the past 29 years...the mean was 56.5 degrees (high of 67, low of 46)...back in 1985 the mean was 56 degrees (66/46)...only the fourth 60s high and fifth 40s low of the past 29 years.

September 7: only the second 70s low of the 29 years...low of 70...even warmer was the low of 73 in 1985...record warmest low is 78, set in 1922.

September 6: only the fourth 70s low of the 29 years...low of 73...would've been the warmest of the past 29 years had the low not also been 73 in 1985...the record warmest low of 78 still stands, occurring way back in 1881.

In this blog, I'll recount the records, near records and significantly abnormal temperatures of 2008, starting with the current and looking back to January 1st.
This post covers May through August 2008.

August 31: the high of 90 was only the second 90s high of the past 30 years...it was 92 in 2000.

August 24: the day with perhaps the most unified temperatures: for the highs, there's only three categories but only the 70s (11 occurrences) and 80s (18 occurrences) are prominent...a lone high of 90 occurred in 1983; for the lows, there are only two categories: the 50s (11 occurrences) and 60s (19 occurrences).

August 22: low of 72 was only the third 70s low of the past 30 years. In addition, this was the warmest 70s low of the past 30 years. Others were 71 in 1989 and 70 in 1996.

August 10: low of 58 was only the fifth 50s low of the past 30 years.

August 4: low of 70 was only the sixth 70s low of the past 30 years.

July 30: low of 72 was only the sixth 70s low of the past 30 years.

July 7: low of 71 was only the fourth 70s low of the past 30 years.

July 4: low of 52 was the second coldest low behind 1996's 51.

July 3: high of 71 was the coolest high of the past 30 years. This eclipsed the high of 72 in 2000.

June 12: the hottest June 12th of the past 30 years. The mean was 15 degrees above normal. The low of 73 was 2 degrees short of the record of 75 in 1920. It was only the second 70s low of the past 30 years, this coming on the heels of the low of 70 in 2005. The high of 91 was only the 5th 90s high of the past 30 years.

June 7: low of 69 tied 1979 as the warmest 60s low. The warmest low of the last 30 years is 73 degrees in 1999.

June 6: low of 73 was the first 70s low (and warmest low) of the last 30 years and was 4 degrees short of the record low of 77 set in 1925.

May 27: high of 50 (23 degrees below normal) and low of 42 for a mean of 46, 16 degrees below normal. The high of 50 replaces 54 in 1996 as the coolest high of the past 30 years. The mean of 46 replaces the prior coolest mean of 48 in 1992. In 1992, the mean was 14 below normal - the low was the coolest (33 degrees).

May 22: high of 59 tied the same high in 1986...these are tied for the coolest highs of the last 30 years

ORD Temperature Updates 2008 (Feb.)

In this blog, I'll recount the records, near records and significantly abnormal temperatures of 2008, starting with the current and looking back to January 1st.
This post covers February 2008.

February 28: the second coldest day of the last 30 years...high of 26 with only the third single-digit low (8 degrees)...that low tied 1986 as the coldest temp.

February 21: the high of 23 was only the second high in the 20s (21 in 2001). The low of 8 was just the third single-digits low temp. Overall, it was the second coldest day of the last 30 years.

February 20: the coldest February 20th of the last 30 years. The high of 19 and low of 5 were the coldest. The mean was 17 degrees below the normal mean of 29 degrees.

February 19:
the second coldest February 19th of the last 30 years. The high of 14 was the coldest of the last 30 years. The low of 4 was the third coldest. The mean was 19 degrees below the normal mean of 28.

February 18: the low of 7 degrees was one of the coldest for the date.

February 16: the low of 5 degrees was one of the coldest for the date.

February 11: the second coldest February 11th of the last 30 years. The high of 15 was only the third high in the 10s (10-19 degrees). The low of -3 was only the fourth low in the negative single digits and fifth low below zero. The mean was 20 degrees below the normal mean of 26. Only 1981 was colder. In 1981, the high was 10 with a low of -11 and the mean was 26 and a half degrees below normal.

February 10: now a three-way tie for 2nd coldest February 10th. These following three days share a mean of 6 degrees which is 20 degrees below normal. This year the high was 16 with a low of -4. Last year the high was 13 with a low of -1. And in 1979 the high was 12 with a low of 0. The coldest remains 1982 when the high was 5 and the low -12 (the mean of -3.5 was 29.5 below the normal of 26). 1994 was also very cold. The high was 21 with a low of -8. Lest I forget, 1986 had a high of 18 with a low of -2. To complete the listing of days of -12 or more below normal mean, 1980 had a high of 21 with a low of 4.

February 4: tied 1993 as the second warmest. This year the high was 44 with a low of 32. In 1993 the high was 52 with a low of 24. The warmest still remains
the high of 51 and low of 36 in 1991.
